Saving the Lakes and Coorong for generations to comeThe Australian Government will provide $200 million to South Australia to address the environmental problems facing the Lower Lakes and Coorong. Lower Lakes and Coorong Recovery is about getting the community and the best available scientific and technical minds together to develop a coordinated management response for the region. This is part of the South Australian Government’s $610 million Murray Futures program funded by the Australian Government’s Water for the Future program. Naturally, there are a lot of feasibility studies, technical, engineering and environmental assessments to be done. But we are on our way to rehabilitating this precious Ramsar site and ensuring a long-term sustainable future for the communities and industries reliant on it. Working together to get resultsThe South Australian Government is working with the community, scientists and industry to develop a long-term plan for the Coorong, Lower Lakes and Murray Mouth region. This is an important first step to help identify a realistic sustainable future for the region – one that will address the environmental, community and economic values that are important to the region. Our aim is for a coordinated management response for the future of the Coorong and Lower Lakes, and involving the community along the way is critical to the success of our work. Community inputThe South Australian Government is close to finalising the long-term plan for the region. The plan has been developed in three stages with input from the community, scientists and industry. Further information on developing a long-term plan for the region and other work underway in the region is available on the Department for Environment and Heritage’s Coorong, Lower Lakes and Murray Mouth Projects website. |
